Samsung Google TV Could Land in 2011

We hear today that Samsung could be creating a Google TV and making it ready for launch sometime in 2011. No specifics have been given other than they should run Intel Atom processors and have Google TV embedded. It is also believed that more than one will be created (ie, a line of TVs). Bloomberg [...]

Optimus One is LG's fastest-selling phone ever: one million in 40 days

One million units sold in the realm of smartphones isn't quite as impressive of a feat as it once was -- especially if your phone is available on numerous carriers around the world. Still, there's something to be said for the pace at which it reaches the milestone, and for LG, the Optimus One managed Seven Digits in just 40 days after initial launch. Given that it's still rolling out globally -- Verizon's about to pick it up November 18th as the Vortex -- we doubt that number's letting up anytime soon. On a related note, given the success of this budget-minded Android 2.2 phone, something tells us LG will be focusing much heavier on that market segment.

Congrats, Self-Righteous Internet Mob. You Killed a Magazine.

If you are one of many who has spread the Twitter flames, signed an onlinepetitionor joined a Facebook group to hate on Cooks Source, congratulations. You proved the power of the Internet mob. In a post today, Judith Griggs apologizes (again) and tells everyone that this scandal and the harassing of advertisers has most likely killed the magazine. Was Griggs a total jerk who deserved to be called out? Yes.Plagiarismis obviously never OK and when called on it, even if you've had a bad day, you don't ask for money. It was just mind-bogglingly stupid. Is she as great of a copy editor as she claimed? Not judging by the typos in the above blog post. Was Cooks Source likely going to go out of business anyway if this is emblematic of how it acts and it was tipped into insolvency so quickly? Maybe. Did she deserve to have the Internet destroy her business over-- from what most of us know-- was one series of mistakes? No.

Evigroup Paddle tablet goes Pro, gets cursor-controlling, head-tracking webcam

Evigroup Paddle tablet goes Pro, gets cursor-controlling, head-tracking webcam
Some day, in the distant future, we'll be activating windows, clicking buttons, and playing Farmville with our minds. Our minds. There have been attempts to get us there, none fully comprehensive, though the Evigroup Paddle Pro tablet is taking an interesting alternative approach: using head tracking to control the cursor. Apparently its front-facing webcam detects your front-facing mug and as you look about the screen it moves the cursor appropriately. Staring rudely at any button or control for a half-second equates to a click and, while we don't yet know how you'll double-click, we'd like to think a spasmodic twitch will be required. Evigroup is also launching a curvy keyboard to go with the Paddle Pro and is promising the ability to play video and audio wirelessly courtesy of a "small station" that connects to your TV. The internals, meanwhile, are perfectly predictable: a netbook spec Atom N450 struggling with Windows 7 Home Premium. No word on price or availability.

The Beatles are coming to iTunes say multiple sources

WSJ and Billboard magazine claim deal is done
The Beatles are coming to iTunes say multiple sources

Apple is to announce that it has finally signed a deal to bring The Beatles to iTunes, as part of its "exciting announcement"?teaser, for those who don't already own it on vinyl, tape, CD, or illegal download.

The news, being reported by multiple sources to the Wall Street Journal and Billboard magazine, will see the end to a long running dream of Apple's to eventually sell the Fab Four's complete collection digitally.

Billboard magazine is citing a number sources, and even goes as far as saying that the clocks used to represent the time on the advert on Apple’s homepage are identical to the arms on the “Help” album from The Beatles (which they're not, really). ?

"For starters, the sources in the past that quashed any rumors of an impending Beatles launch are today very quiet, and strangely so. Next is the wording of the teaser on Apple's website. The first line is, "Tomorrow is just another day". As noted earlier,?"Another Day"?is a Paul McCartney song released on his solo record "Ram", but written during the Beatles' "Let it Be" sessions", reports Billboard.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal is going with the story as confirmed, rather than its usual “sources familiar with the matter”.

“The deal resulted from talks that were taking place as recently as last week among executives of Apple, representatives of the Beatles and their record label, EMI Group Ltd., according to these people, who also warned that there is still a chance that Apple could change plans at the last minute”, Reports the WSJ.

The Beatles' back catalogue being?available electronically has been a goal of Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, for some time, with numerous attempts at making it happen only for it to be called off at the last minute.

The deal, says Billboard magazine, is expected to be an exclusive for Apple’s iTunes service, although the magazine isn't sure for how long.

SugarSync giveaway: win a 30GB account for a year

Filed under:

SugarSync giveawayWhen I reviewed SugarSync for Android in September, I came away with one resounding conclusion: it's better than Dropbox. The Android experience is better, and the Web experience is better. There was just one niggle: the free version of SugarSync was feature-crippled. Earlier today, however, SugarSync lifted the crippling restrictions from its free version and bumped the storage up to 5 GB.

In my mind, there's now no reason to use Dropbox -- unless you're a Linux user, in which case you can stop reading now (SugarSync still doesn't support it). The rest of you should head on over and sign up for a free account. If the multi-device support (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Symbian!) doesn't blow your mind, the share-this-folder-with-a-friend feature will.

But wait! What if 5 gigabytes isn't enough -- because let's face it, 5 GB is the merest of data morsels in today's day and age. Maybe you want 30 GB, free, for a year! In that case, enter our giveaway by leaving a comment below -- we have 10 year-long subscriptions to give away! Full terms and conditions are after the break.

  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are 18 and older.
  • To enter, leave a comment below.
  • The comment must be left by Saturday, November 13 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time.
  • You may enter only once.
  • Winners will be selected in a random drawing.
  • 10 winners will receive a SugarSync 30GB one (1) year subscription, retail value of $49.99 USD.
  • Click Here for complete Official Rules.

Orbox B is a fast, tricky Time-Waster

orboxb

Orbox B is a puzzle, but it's one with a very frenetic pace. Each level is composed of a "field" of blocks that are carefully arranged. You control a single block and the object is to get it to the exit. Here's the tricky part: once your block starts moving, it won't stop unless it hits something. And if it falls off the board, you lose. When you do hit another block, you stop -- and then it's time to figure out your next move. Which block should you hit now?

Short-term planning will only get you so far, though. As you progress, planning your moves carefully becomes more important. You must hit the other blocks in the exact sequence needed to eventually make your way to the end. The higher levels also introduce other block types that can disappear after you hit them, snap shut, or do all sorts of other tricks.

It's a minimalistic game, and it's very fast. There is no background music and restarting is instantaneous. Orbox B is also begging for an Android port - in fact, if you know of one, let me know in the comments.

The Nexus S: a closer look

Google CEO Eric Schmidt showed the world the Nexus S from a distance just a little while ago, but we knew you'd want more, and so we managed to convince the man to show us the device in person just a few minutes ago. What should you know about the heir apparent to the Nexus One? Well, it's exceptionally thin -- we weren't able to compare, but we'd say it's at least comparable with an iPhone 4 if not slimmer still -- and it's thinner in the middle than at either end, giving it a mildly concave profile. There's a glossy plastic bezel up front housing an AMOLED screen, a pair of discrete volume buttons on the left side, and a black plastic back (textured similarly to the BlackBerry Bold, though patchier) which seemed too roughly manufactured to be anything but a prototype. We saw the handset for all of three seconds and weren't able to snap a single picture nor touch it for ourselves, but as Schmidt walked away he left us with one last lingering look at Gingerbread -- the screen shutting off. When he pressed the power button, the image winked out like an old CRT TV, an animation which you'll see a carbon copy of right after the break.

Chat live with scientists flying over Antarctica

What's it like to live and work in Antarctica? What do we learn by studying the frozen continent? We've dug into it a little here at BoingBoing. But this Wednesday, you can get the story straight from the scientists themselves. NASA is sponsoring a live chat with researchers on a DC-8 flying science laboratory. It starts at 1:00 pm Eastern. The chat window will open a half hour before. One cool thing to tide you over until then. That little rainbow smudge in the middle of the this photo isn't something I made by EasyCropping the photo all wrong. And it's not a trick of the camera, either. Instead, NASA says: The distant shadow of the plane is surrounded by a glory, the scattering of light by water droplets and ice crystals in the air. Glories are one of many interesting optical phenomena that are more common in colder climates....

Comcast Xfinity remote app for iPhone, iPad launches, video streaming & Android version on the way

The Xfinity remote app Comcast CEO Brian Roberts showed off earlier this year is now available in the app store for the iPad and iPhone. Currently they allow Comcast customers with compatible digital TV service to browse listings and On Demand content from their portable device and change channels right from the app. Video streaming, additional remote features and enhanced search are all promised for future releases, while other platforms should also get their own versions soon. Android apps are promised for later this year, with Blackberry to follow. For now, check out the press release and original demo video embedded after the break or grab the app from iTunes and break out your Comcast e-mail address to try it out prior to a live demo at 8:30 (EST) this evening at the Web 2.0 conference. It may not be the improved interface for our cable boxes we've been expecting for such a long time, but it's at least a step in that direction.

Eric Schmidt: Chrome OS aimed at keyboard based solutions, Android optimized for touch

We'll be the first to admit that we've been slightly confused about where Google's Chrome OS will fit in with Android becoming the OS of choice for tablet manufacturers, so naturally we took the opportunity to ask Google CEO Eric Schmidt about the two operating systems while he was on stage at the Web 2.0 summit. Schmidt confirmed that Chrome OS will officially be out in the next few months in Intel and ARM-powered netbooks while also adding that the OS was primarily "designed around something with a keyboard." Of course, that doesn't mean Chrome OS couldn't pop up on tablets -- he added that because it's open source anything can happen, but he definitely stressed that Chrome is meant for clamshell devices with keyboards and Android tailored for those with touchscreens. Sounds good to us Schmidt, now we'll just be needing the details on those Chrome-books...

Sony Ericsson LiveView now available in Europe; if you had a LiveView, you'd know that already

Look, the future is in hyper-informed wrist accessories. If you don't know that by now, what do you know? Not that, assuredly. Sony Ericsson's Android-augmenting, Bluetooth-tethered LiveView accessory is now available in some European countries, including some fan faves like the UK, Germany, and France. Prices seem to vary from country to country, with a UK version going for £48.97 (about $79 US), France getting a €59 shot at it (about $80 US), and Germany swooping in with an über-low €42 tag (about $57 US). All three disparate prices seem a small amount to pay to place the future on your wrist / other clippable surface, but maybe that's just us.

[Thanks, Jason]

Rahul Sood leaving HP

HP acquired VoodooPC and its founder Rahul Sood in 2006, and it's been a wild ride ever since. The ever out-spoken Rahul has brought a lot of "Voodoo DNA" to HP products, most notably the Envy line, but also witnessed the slow fade of the actual Voodoo brand. He also went on a lot of extreme cycling trips in-between all the product teases and wild statements. Rahul isn't saying exactly why he's leaving HP, but he has penned a substantial blog post detailing some of Voodoo's history and thanking a whole bunch of people and companies. As for his time with HP: "We merged, we invented, we kicked ass, and we had fun, but then things got a little complicated." What he means by "complicated" is unclear, but whatever Rahul is moving on to next (he says he "can't wait to be directly involved in a product pipeline again," for what it's worth), we're sure he'll do it with his trademark flair for the dramatic that we've come to know and love.

Revamped Double-Decker Bus Goes on View in London

boris johnson and bus
Back in May, we learned that London's iconic, double-decker buses would be getting a green makeover, just in time for the 2012 Summer Olympics. On Thursday, city mayor Boris Johnson finally unveiled a life-size model of the new bus in all its red resplendence.

Unveiled at the London Transport Museum, the new bus is modeled after the original Routemaster, and features an open platform and a maximum capacity of 87 passengers. Unlike its predecessors, however, the revamped Routemaster will feature a hybrid engine that's 40-percent more fuel efficient than diesel-powered models. Beginning in 2012, the city will unleash just five prototypes on the streets of London. After that, private companies will be able to order more, should they so desire.

3.5-inch floppy revived as USB flash drive

We loved the 3.5-inch floppy disk when it was first released, as it proved far sturdier compared to its 5.25-inch brethren, not to mention being able to hold a whole lot more data than its flaccid, larger counterpart. Well, fast forward a few decades, mix it up with a sense of nostalgia and some creativity, and you get a 3.5-inch floppy disk that looks like one on the outside, but inside, it houses a USB connector as well as flash memory. This hack will require a couple of disks that have been cut apart and stacked together, so that the connector will be able to be placed within nice and snug. We don't think this is going to hit the markets anytime soon though, as it doesn't look worth the effort to roll it out on a mass scale.

Intel and AMD form unlikely alliance for MeeGo

AMD has been announced as the latest major player for the Linux Foundation's MeeGo open source project, joining Nokia and its chip making nemesis Intel at the table.

Speaking at the MeeGo Conference 2010, AMD's corporate vice-president of software development Ben Bar-Haim underlined the importance and signalled what AMD's involvement would be.

"MeeGo represents an exciting, open-source mobile operating system we expect to be adopted by mobile and embedded device makers over time", he said.

"We are glad to provide engineering resources to joint industry efforts like MeeGo and expect that this operating system will help drive our embedded plans and create expanded market opportunities for our forthcoming Accelerated Processing Units".

"Built from the ground up for a whole new class of mobile computing devices, MeeGo gives companies like AMD and its partners unlimited opportunities to accelerate innovation for the next generation of computing," said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation.

"As an existing Linux Foundation member, AMD will be an important and valuable contributor to the MeeGo Project".
