LG Optimus 2X goes on sale in Korea, teases white version for February

No big surprises here, unless you count that snowy white number up above. Yep, LG's not only stolen a march on Motorola in introducing the world's first dual-core smartphone, it's also about to beat Apple to the white handset punch as well. The 1080p-recording, Tegra 2-wielding Optimus 2X is now available in its home market of South Korea and, if LG stays true to its roadmap, should be filtering through into Europe before this month is out. We don't know if its white variant will ever escape the clutches of Korea (and we sure hope it does), but it should be making its bodacious debut over there in February.

Visualized: the state of the smartphone wars

As AT&T's iPhone exclusivity reluctantly teeters on the brink of oblivion, it seems a good time to take one last look at the smartphone playground, the way it is before V-Day. The New York Times has handily done that job for us with the above chart, which simultaneously gives us a sense of scale when comparing US carriers and lays out the concentration of Android devices across those networks. It also shows a big fat bump of iOS on AT&T, making it the biggest carrier in terms of combined iPhone and Android users -- nothing shocking there, but the real fun will be in taking a look at this same data a few months from now. Will the iPhone fragment itself all over the four major networks? Will AT&T's Android stable ever be respectable? Tune in to your next installment of "fun, but mostly irrelevant statistics" to find out.

XBMC comes to the iPad

We were politely asked to keep quiet about this until today, but here's the truth: XBMC now runs on the Apple A4, period. As in, there's no reason why you can't install that shiny new Apple TV 2 version of the media center software on your jailbroken iPad or iPhone 4 too. Find instructions at our more coverage link... then give the hackers and developers a cheer.

Super Street Fighter IV 3D - 3DS quick play preview

Hadouken!
Super Street Fighter IV 3D - 3DS quick play preview

Super Street Fighter IV is heading to the 3DS bringing the 23-year-old beat-em-up series into the crazy world of handheld 3D action.

And although we've known that the title was going to launch on the 3DS for a while now, this is the first time that we've been able to get our paws on it.

Luckily, playing Street Fighter is like riding a bike, you never forget those special move combos.

Name

Super Street Fighter IV 3D

What platform is it on?

Nintendo 3DS

When's it out?

During the "launch window", which is 25 March - early June.

What other game is it like?

Dead of Alive: Dimensions

Does it use any new tech?

3D action aplenty and also SSFIV taps into the StreetPass and SpotPass aspects of the console to let you do battle with your buddies, even if they don't have the game.

"Of course if the download version was the same as the full version then Capcom would go bankrupt", joked Capcom's Yoshinori Ono at the launch event in Amsterdam.

Instead the free version lets non-owners play as Ryu and they can even Dragon Punch the crap out of other demo version holders in Ryu v Ryu matches.

There are also bonuses to collect in the form of approximately 500 figurines which do battle with other 3DSers when you're not actively playing the game.

The pitch?

Super Street Fighter IV includes all the original 25 characters from the home version of Street Fighter IV, as well as 10 new characters, making 35 in total.

Capcom is saying that the game is "exactly the same" as its HD counterparts, which is nice.

The storyline?

Super Street Fighter IV 3D is based on the 2010 beat-em-up produced by Capcom. It is an updated version of Street Fighter IV and has been said to mark the definitive end of the fourth instalment of the Street Fighter series

Our first impressions

Yep, yep. yep - this definitely works with 3D and feels much more than a novelty. The camera sits high up and you not only get a good view of the action, but a very deep sense of your location and surroundings.

When you pull of a combo, the animation looks fantastic as it bursts out of the top screen. Combos are made all the easier as well with the bottom screen allowing you to map special moves and the like. There is a pro-control setup too, for people who like to pull off the moves themselves.

The gameplay, however, is a little trickier than its console equivalents as the 3DS' button layout doesn't really suit the 6-button config. However, you may well get used to the setup after a longer gaming session.

This looks a sure-winner in the early 3DS beat-em-up market. For our money's worth it just has the edge over Dead or Alive: Dimensions.

Please note

The Nintendo 3DS launch in Amsterdam was a fantastic chance to see the new titles due in the launch window, letting us get a glimpse into what are going to be the big titles and the ones to avoid like the plague.

The big problem however, is that for most of the titles that glimpse is, well, just that. At the event we got to play a level here or a multiplayer map there.

So with that in mind we present you with our Quick Play.

What we've done is broken down the key facts you need to know and then given you our first impressions based on around 15 minutes of gaming. For us that 15 minutes isn't enough to do a First Look review. How can you rate a game that offers over 30 hours of gaming on just 15 minutes of play? However, it should hopefully give you an idea, a feeling, a notion, of what to expect come launch day.

How do you launch a phone that's already launched?
VIDEO: Verizon iPhone advert thanks those who waited. Phones, iPhone, Apple, Verizon, adverts, video 0

How do you launch a phone that's already been launched before? Well, if you're Verizon and you're launching the iPhone, the easy way to do it would seem to be a advert that says thanks for waiting and not shifting to AT&T.?

Verizon has started rolling out a new iPhone advert in the US ahead of its 10 February iPhone 4 launch date that simply says:

"To our millions of customers who never stopped believing this day would come, thank you."

Of course, how they are going to explain that to all the Droid customers they sided with to say the iPhone wasn't that hot? Looks like it's a new dawn out there.

Kinect 3D Viewer now available in Mac App Store, but don't get too excited

Kinect 3D Viewer
The first Kinect app has just popped up in the Mac App Store, but unfortunately it does exactly what its name suggests. Kinect 3D Viewer lets you... view the output from the Kinect depth-sensing camera... in 3D!

It actually has two output options: you can either see a 3D point cloud, which excellently shows off the resolution of depth detection, or you can "view yourself in 3D", which looks very similar to the proof-of-concept Linux/Kinect hacks that we saw in November. There's no information about how the Kinect integration was achieved, but presumably the developers used a Mac port of libfreenect.

Hopefully there will be a follow-up app that actually does something -- but having said that, how many Mac users with Xbox 360s can there possibly be?

Student Ranks Female Classmates on Facebook, But the Ladies Fight Back

haley reaA suburban Illinois student is facing expulsion for ranking 50 of his female classmates, and posting the list to Facebook. The unnamed Oak Park-River Forest High School student, who has since been suspended, also gave other male students hard copies of the list, which ranked girls based on their physical attractiveness and level of alleged promiscuity, and labeled them with names such as "Fallen Angel," "Blonde Bombshell" and "The Hangover."

Sound familiar? If you've watched 'The Social Network,' you'll remember the scene in which Mark Zuckerberg creates a website called FaceMash that ranks the women in his college. The coeds in the film weren't particularly pleased with young Zuck's list, and neither were the young women in Oak Park. And they weren't about stay quiet.

Universal iPhone bumper found in Apple Store, mute button gets more space (video)

We were wondering how Apple was going to handle two different button configurations for its AT&T and Verizon iPhones, and well, the solution couldn't be simpler. One reader visiting the Apple Store stumbled upon a bumper with a slightly different packaging. Thankfully, this intrigued him enough to pick one up and do a side-by-side comparison between this new "universal case" and the old first-party solution. The only change, since volume buttons are mapped identically between the two, is a slot for the mute button that's decidedly less mute. Definitely works with his AT&T model and should theoretically fit Verizon's model, too. Tough luck if you're making a move to Big Red and trying to bring an old case, but let's be honest... you'd be paying a pretty penny for the new device anyway, so what's a few more dollars for physical protection? Video comparison after the break.

[Thanks, Alex!]

Scientists create 10 billion qubits in silicon, get us closer than ever to quantum computing

qubits
We are totally ready for a quantum computer. Browse the dusty Engadget archives and you'll find many posts about the things, each charting another step along the way to our supposed quantum future. Here's another step, one that we think is a pretty big one. An international team of scientists has managed to generate 10 billion quantum entangled bits, the basic building block of a quantum computer, and embed them all in silicon which is, of course, the basic building block of a boring computer. It sounds like there's still some work to be done to enable the team to actually modify and read the states of those qubits, and probably a decade's worth of thumb-twiddling before they let any of us try to run Crysis on it, but yet another step has been made.

Play videos and music stored on your Windows 7 computer on a connected TV

Windows 7 makes a number of networking tasks a whole lot easier to tackle -- one of which is sharing the music, movies, and photos stored on your computer with today's network-ready TVs. If your fancy new flatscreen can connect to your wired or wireless network, it can probably also play your Windows 7 media.

To set things up, hit the Windows key and type streaming in the search box. Wait for Media streaming options to appear, then press enter. When the options window appears, look for your TV in the devices list. If the button to the right does not read "allowed," click blocked and change it. As long as your TV supports DLNA, that's all there is to it -- now it's just a matter of finding the right menu with your remote so you can start enjoying your videos!

You even have the option of limiting access to content. Only want videos you've rated 3 stars or better to be available on your living room TV? Don't want your photos displayed there? No problem. Just click the customize... link and check or uncheck a few boxes.

If you want a little more background on Windows 7's media streaming features, check out this post from Microsoft.

Google: Motorola Xoom is lead Honeycomb product

Google: Motorola Xoom is lead Honeycomb product

Pocket-lint sat down with Google and Motorola to talk about Android 3.0 Honeycomb today, after Google told us that the Xoom was the lead product for the new tablet version of Android.

If you were paying attention at CES 2011, you’ll have heard a lot of manufacturers announcing Honeycomb tablets, that is, tablet devices running Android 3.0. The software didn’t appear however, but it was made clear that Honeycomb was to be the tablet version of Google’s mobile OS.

Motorola and Google demonstrated Android 3.0 to us on the Xoom in a form that hasn’t yet been seen - a different build from the half-baked version demonstrated at CES (a sample of which was also rolled out for us to play with again). The demos we’ve seen on video so far were shown to us live.

Dave Burke, engineering manager for Mobile at Google demonstrated the changes to some of Honeycomb’s core applications, with Jonathan Nattrass and Andrew Morely representing Motorola Mobility.

Burke opened by outlining that big iterations of Android involves a hardware partner. For Android 2.3, Gingerbread, it was Samsung and the Nexus S; for Android 3.0, Honeycomb, it is Motorola and the Xoom tablet, calling it the “lead” product. (With HTC having been in on the action with the Nexus One, when will it be LG’s turn…?)

When questioned what Google gets from this arrangement with Motorola, Burke candidly responded that Google wanted access to the latest hardware, which in this case is what the Xoom brings. Equipped with the 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core chipset, it offers the sort of processing and graphics power that we haven’t seen before on this type of mobile device.

But it seems that the arrangement goes further than just hardware and software supply chains, as there were embedded employees at both ends of the deal, with Moto staffers working on Android 3.0 development and Googlers working on the Xoom.

We asked if what we were looking at was pure Android 3.0 and the answer was an absolute “yes”. However, Motorola outlined that they would be adding additional features to the Xoom and that they could add these via updates over the air. An example given was a connected music player, with Motorola saying that this would come later in the year, along with more familiar Motoblur-type features.

Burke did go on to say that given the open source nature of Android, manufacturers would be free to customise the platform as has happened with every other iteration of Android. It’s still not clear exactly what you’ll be greeted with when you lift your new Motorola Xoom from the box, but it seems that if you want Android Honeycomb as Google intended, then the Xoom is where it's at.

When the demonstration was over, however, the Android 3.0-sporting Xoom was snaffled away from our probing fingers, so hands-on time wasn’t an option.

iOS devices filling up? Try deleting some apps

deleting apps

This morning, my Apps runneth-ed over. This afternoon, after a brutal once-over, not so much. I just deleted over a hundred applications from my iTunes library, and storage-wise, my iOS devices are breathing a little easier for it. To delete an app in iTunes, you can select one in Apps, press the Delete key and click Remove when a dialog appears asking if you are sure you want to remove the app from your iTunes library (you can also right-click an app and choose Delete). Then you should get a dialog asking if you'd like to keep the file or move it to the trash. I keep these files so that they no longer appear in iTunes, because apps tend to be tiny and I've got plenty of storage. You can always trash them, however, and get them back via Time Machine -- provided that you back up your machine regularly. Another neat trick is going into your iTunes account and checking your purchase history, although this can take a while to load and isn't searchable or sortable.

As a blogger for TUAW, I collect a lot more paid apps than most people. But contrary to what you might think, it wasn't the review apps that were clogging up my app collection. I'm actually pretty good about testing, writing-up (or giving feedback about why I'm not writing-up) and then tossing promo-code apps. The apps that were clogging up iTunes were the "Lite" ones. All those demo items that I decided to give a try just to see if I wanted to go for the whole shebang or not.

I truly wish iTunes had a "Delete all lite apps" option, because it took a while to sort through those guys, figure out what I had (and had not) tested, and what I had (and had not) upgraded. I had more cruft than I remember downloading (I think I'm going to blame my kids for that) and quite a few that we had already bought in their "pro" or "full" versions. You can, of course, search your apps for "free" and "lite" words, but you will have to remember which ones you bought as full versions.

Send to Kindle extension for Google Chrome saves articles to your Kindle

Kindle owners who would rather read web articles on their Kindle devices than on a laptop screen are in luck: there's now a Send to Kindle Chrome extension. With a little bit of setup, you can pass articles to your Kindle over Wi-Fi or Amazon's Whispernet with one click.

When you install Send to Kindle, you'll see a setup screen where you'll have to enter your Kindle's registered email address. Then, jaunt over to your Kindle Management page at Amazon and add the extension's email address -- "kindle@klip.me" -- to your list of approved senders.

Now the hard work is done. When you see an article you want to send to Kindle, you'll just have to click Send to Kindle's toolbar button, and it will be delivered immediately. If you have an older, pre-3rd-generation KIndle, just make sure that you've set some limits on 3G data transfer before you go too crazy racking up bandwidth charges from Amazon.

Firemint sells three million copies of Flight Control

Firemint has shared some sales figures about Flight Control over on its blog. The now classic line-drawing game was recently listed in the top paid apps of all time on the App Store, and so Firemint decided to reveal a little bit about how many copies it's sold and when. The grand total is exactly 3,881,634 copies as of their posting. The game currently sells for 99 cents, but that doesn't mean Firemint pulled in $3.8 million as Apple takes their 30% share as well.

Firemint has also posted the chart above, showing when the most copies sold. Interesting to see that the Game Center patch gave them the biggest spike in sales, though don't forget that Flight Control was one of the first games on the service as it went live, something that certainly encouraged extra downloads. The new maps and the Retina Display support patches also gave big bumps. iOS developers, take note: big feature updates sell apps.

Christmas boosts sales as well, as we've discussed here in the past. What's most interesting about those bumps, I think, is that they're basically the same size -- Christmas is turning into a pretty predictable spike in iOS sales for developers. We saw a lot of "planned" releases and discounts last holiday, and I bet we'll see even more as time goes on. Of course this is only one app on the store, but it's one of the biggest apps of all time, and probably a good representation of a lot of bestselling apps. Thanks to Firemint for sharing!
