Facebook holding event on Wednesday

Like our sibling site, Android Central, TiPb has been invited to a mobile event at Facebook HQ this Wednesday, November 3. If it had just been AC, I’d have started wondering about that Facebook phone. Just TiPb and I might have thought iPad app. Both Android and iOS at the same bash and maybe Facebook [...]

MyTouch 3G FroYo Distribution Window Extended

Originally the MyTouch 3G 1.0 was supposed to have its FroYo roll out completed by 25 October. That window has now been extended to 15 December.

A disappointment for sure as no reason was given for why the delay was issued, the only reason I can infer is to alleviate network stress; but that’s all [...]

Tube receives first Wi-Fi connection

Tube receives first Wi-Fi connection

Charing Cross will be the first tube to offer Wi-Fi connectivity to the masses, marking a new milestone after numerous attempts in the past to get the tube connected. BT just made this announcement, where a 6-month trial will bring Wi-Fi connectivity to the ticket hall and both the Bakerloo and Northern line platforms. It will be made free for BT broadband customers as well as mobile users with free Wi-Fi minutes, with the trial starting from next month onwards. This will clearly make headway in increasing the City of London's current 95% Wi-Fi coverage in due time. Of course, with London hosting the Olympics in two years’ time, it makes perfect sense if such trials were to be deemed successful and implemented throughout the city in due time.

TSA demands testicular fondling as an alternative to naked scanners

The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg has been experimenting with declining the whole-body TSA scanners at US airports -- and now things have gotten more intimate. The TSA has initiated a new, more humiliating pat-down procedure for people who refuse to show screeners their genitals on the naked scanners -- one that involves testicular cupping: At BWI, I told the officer who directed me to the back-scatter that I preferred a pat-down. I did this in order to see how effective the manual search would be. When I made this request, a number of TSA officers, to my surprise, began laughing. I asked why. One of them -- the one who would eventually conduct my pat-down -- said that the rules were changing shortly, and that I would soon understand why the back-scatter was preferable to the manual search. I asked him if the new guidelines included a cavity search. "No way. You think Congress would allow that?" I answered, "If you're a terrorist, you're going to hide your weapons in your anus or your vagina." He blushed when I said "vagina." "Yes, but starting tomorrow, we're going to start searching your crotchal area" -- this is the word he used, "crotchal" -- and you're not going to like it." "What am I not going to like?" I asked. "We have to search up your thighs and between your legs until we meet resistance," he explained. "Resistance?" I asked. "Your testicles," he explained. 'That's funny," I said, "because 'The Resistance' is the actual name I've given to my testicles..." The pat-down at BWI was fairly vigorous, by the usual tame standards of the TSA, but it was nothing like the one I received the next day at T.F. Green in Providence. Apparently, I was the very first passenger to ask to opt-out of back-scatter imaging. Several TSA officers heard me choose the pat-down, and they reacted in a way meant to make the ordinary passenger feel very badly about his decision. One officer said to a colleague who was obviously going to be assigned to me, "Get new gloves, man, you're going to need them where you're going." Verizon Rebate From Shows Motorola Droid 2 Global, Droid Pro, and Citrus

With rumors that U.S. carrier Verizon Wireless will be getting a whole slew of smartphones in November, a new rebate form for the carrier does oust the Droid 2 Global--in two variations, perhaps one without a camera--and some newer Motorola handsets, such as the Droid Pro and the Motorola Citrus.

All three Motorola handsets are slated with a $100 mail-in rebate from the carrier.

Scooby Doo solves the mystery of the missing Google Halloween doodle [TNW Google]

Beware: malware version of Microsoft Security Essentials in the wild

Microsoft Security Essentials fake
A new and exceedingly evil piece of malware that very cleverly imitates Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) has emerged. It goes by the designation Win32/FakePAV -- and if you haven't recently updated your virus and malware definitions, do it now.

Screenshots on the Malware Protection Center website show this piece of malware to be depressingly good -- it really does imitate MSE very well. It probably wouldn't catch out power users (what does?), but it's easy to see how your friends and family might be fooled by this dastardly rogue.

As always, the attack vector is drive-by download, where an infected website sends you the malware executable. The first thing it does is load itself into registry, then it terminates a huge list of processes, and finally it starts popping up MSE-lookalike dialogue boxes that warn you of infection. Of course, it also watches for any programs you try to start -- if it doesn't like them, it pops up a warning box to tell you it's infected.

The best bit -- and you really need to look at the screenshots (scroll down) to appreciate this -- is that it tries to get you to buy a slew of other "anti-virus" packages with names like Red Cross Antivirus, Peak Protection 2010 and Pest Detector. Each of these fake apps has a splash screen and even a unique logo!

Remember, as technology improves, the nefarious capabilities of malware authors will also blossom. The only real solution is to stay one step ahead -- and the best way you can do that is to practice safe browsing and keep your virus and malware software up-to-date.

Halloween Games! Face the Cuddly Undead in Flash Shooter 'ZOMGZombies'

ZomgZombies
Ah... Halloween. We embrace our spooky sides by filling our October nights with horror, donning our black capes and, of course, playing as many terrifying video games as possible. (Don't you?) While we can't deny the appeal of monster mainstays like 'Frankenstein' and 'Dracula,' our horror tastes lean towards the brain-munching variety. So join us as we indulge in our love of Halloween by blasting shambling hordes of reanimated corpses with this week's crop of zombie-themed Flash games.

While 'ZOMGZombies' may look cute and cuddly, a serious challenge lies beneath its adorable exterior: to survive! Standing between you and life eternal are hordes of cartoonish zombies that will do everything in their power to eat your cerebellum. Quick instincts are required for each claustrophobic stage, as you try to avoid the menacing revenants while trying to blast their brains out. Manipulate your limbless avatar with arrow keys to move, the spacebar to fire and the 'E' key to lob grenades. (What's dystopia without grenades?) You're going to need to keep blasting, though, because it's game over if any zombie manages to walk off screen. Pro tip: Run near any zombies heading out of sight in order to lure them back toward you, and try to get multiple zombies to line up single-file in order to take them all out with a few quick head shots.

In the Boing Boing DIY Hallowe'en Costume thread, Boing Boing reader stefrobb says, I made a Bender costume for my eldest, who is 8 years old. 'Bnter' Lets You Share Your Embarrassing Texts With Friends

screenshot of bntr
Lauren Leto, co-founder of 'Texts From Last Night,' regularly receives submissions from users looking to share their most hilariously embarrassing texts with the rest of the world. Unfortunately, though, many of them never make the cut. "A lot of the texts go unused because they're not funny and don't fit into our set of guidelines because the jokes are too personal," Leto tells the New York Times. "It might be hilarious, but it makes no sense out of context." Yesterday, however, the 23-year-old launched a new site called Bnter, which may offer texters an entirely new way to share those moments that need some extra explanation.

The idea behind Bnter (pronounced 'banter') is pretty simple; users can share their personal text conversations in an intuitive format, and follow and comment on their friends' SMS exchanges. "It's a way to share conversations and interact with your friends," Leto explains. For now, Bnter exists only as a website, but the company will launch a corollary iPhone app as soon as it receives clearance from Apple.

Tech deals: Samsung E65 ereader now available at PC World and Currys. eBook readers, Samsung, Samsung e65, PC world, Currys, 0

The new Samsung E65 ereader is now on sale exclusively at Curry's and PC World for ?199, for anyone who's perhaps looking for an alternative to the Kindle.

We've already reviewed its brother, Samsung's E60 ebook reader, so this is the company's latest attempt to enter into the ereader market; here's the full low-down on the other model.

The key tech with the Samsung E65 is its ability to give users multi-purpose functionality - rather like a swiss army knife, but without the tool for getting stones out of horses hooves.

This multi-functionality includes the ability to read, write and "organise".

As the blurb reads: "An integrated pen, which allows free handwriting and has a truly natural writing feel, makes this a really versatile and fun to use gadget.? Not only is it an e-reader, but it can also be used as a datebook, notebook and diary.? In addition, books, newspapers and images can be modified directly on screen with post-it style memos". ?

You'll also get a huge library courtesy of WH Smith, and with over a million books to choose from there should be enough choice to keep you going for some time.

The screen should be nice and clear, as the 6-incher get an eight level grey scale LCD screen and utilises the E-Ink tech. A built-in mp3 player, 2GB memory, full QWERTY, USB and Wi-Fi connectivity round off the package.

To check it out here's a link to the PC World online shop.

Apple posts higher revenue than Microsoft

Apple earned more revenue this quarter than their ancient frenemy, Microsoft. Roughly $20 billion to $16 billion, or $4 billion more. Not too long ago they passed Microsoft in market cap as well, another impressive sounding, if not terribly meaningful measure. Microsoft still leads in profit due to their software-centric business being much higher margin [...]

The Linux credit card -- with Tux on the front and everything

I couldn't make this up if I tried: The Linux Foundation is offering a platinum rewards Visa credit card. There is no annual fee, a low introductory APR -- in fact, it's a normal credit card with Tux on the front.

Every purchase you make with the Linux credit card will kick back a percentage to the Linux Foundation. The Foundation also gets $50 for every activation! In the words of the Foundation, this card is for "those who want to support the Linux Foundation's activities while expressing their commitment to Linux. The Linux credit card is an easy way for anyone to contribute to the growth of Linux and identify themselves as supporters of the community by carrying Tux in their pocket."

Unfortunately it's for U.S citizens only, otherwise I'd sign up right now! If you're going to rack up credit, why not do it in a way that benefits the most important software movement of the last 20 years? Why don't more charities have credit cards...?
