New Leaked Verizon Roadmap Gives Details on Slew of New Android Devices
Apple TV Lowtide (Front Row) running on iPod touch
It's been Apple TV-palooza here at TUAW today. Shortly after discovering that the Apple TV iOS firmware could be downloaded and unpacked, we took our first peek under the hood and saw just how similar the new Apple TV, with its Lowtide software, was to previous Apple TV releases. Soon after, we discovered that the Lowtide application was built with multi-device support, including the iPad, in its list of supported hardware.
Now, developer Dustin Howett has managed to port Lowtide to an iPod touch and run it under iOS 4.1. You can see him running the Apple TV Lowtide software in this video. It's really amazing to see just how compatible the diverse systems are.

NTT DoCoMo to offer Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab soon
NTT DoCoMo is tipped to deliver the Galaxy S to folks living in the Land of the Rising Sun from next month onwards, although if you want a tablet device, then the Galaxy Tab will require much more patience as we are looking at a March release in that part of the world. Word on the street also has it that the SC-02B (Galaxy S) will launch with Froyo right out of the box, which is pretty believable since Froyo will more or less be released for other Galaxy S smartphones in October. Nice to know that for once (or at least, extremely rare moments), Japan's hardware isn't ahead of the other countries where the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S are concerned.

Notebook gets some serious audio tech
At HP's unveiling of its Christmas 2010 lineup of notebooks and accessories, we took the opportunity to get some early snaps of the new Envy 14 Beats Edition.
The slick notebook features a striking black and red design, along with a red backlit keyboard, and will come supplied with a pair of Beats Solo headphones from Monster.
The Envy 14 Beats Edition is an Intel Core machine with ATI Mobility Radeon HD(1) 5650 graphics and 1GB of dedicated memory.
The sound quality is simply fantastic, and nothing like the dreadful tinny speakers that you get on most laptops of this size. The volume goes up so loud, while maintaining sound quality, that it's entirely feasible that you could use the headphones as an alternative to laptop speakers (when they're not on your head, of course).
We'll give it a full review as soon as we can get our mitts on one.

Amazon unveils Kindle for the Web
You can already read Kindle books on a whole host of devices besides the Kindle itself -- like your iPhone, Blackbery, Android device, PC, or Mac -- but Amazon's not stopping there. The mammoth ebook seller has unveiled Kindle for the web, an embeddable reader which is capable of displaying book samples right in your browser. In my testing, however, I didn't have much luck -- I tried to embed every "Look Inside" book by George Carlin after the break, but wound up having to use Amazon's example instead. As Mobiputing's Brad Linder pointed out to me, this could eventually lead to an Amazon Video On Demand-type setup for Kindle: "stream" books to your browser via the viewer, or cache them via HTML5's localstorage element for offline reading. Hey, the Web is the platform, right? Why bother developing dedicated apps for a slew of different devices if you can cleverly code a single Web app which does the job just as well?
Take a look at the embed code in action after the break -- it's a lot like a Google Docs Viewer or Scribd embed. Kindle for the Web currently bears the beta tag, so you might not see it on many Kindle books as you browser Amazon's shelves.

VIDEO: Homemade R2D2 fits standard-sized person
Move over Kenny Baker...
Filed under "too cool for school" and "we so want one of these", this video of a homemade R2D2 is currently doing the rounds, and we're very impressed here on Pocket-lint.
Made from a plastic barrel, presumably by YouTube poster dmalford1, the larger-than-life sized replica is equipped with R2's trademark sounds, internal fans, LED bulbs (hard to see in the daylight clip), and a rotating hood.
It's also fitted with motors, making it possibly the coolest mobility scooter you could ever have. Imagine an old-age pensioner pootling along to ASDA in their own astromech droid. "Help me Obi Wan, I seem to have put my hip out, can't get the lid open, and toilet time came about 20 minutes ago".
It'd make for a very different movie.

Apple 11.6-inch MacBook Air "coming soon, real soon", say sources
Primary notebook manufacturer lands orders to produce new model
Apple could be about to revamp its MacBook Air in time for Christmas, bringing with it a smaller screen and lighter design, according to sources in the Far East.
Although Apple has yet to confirm anything official, rumours of orders placed in Taiwan suggest that a refresh is imminent.
Since launching the MacBook Air almost 3 years ago, Apple's lightweight laptop has had just two updates; the last being in June 2009 when it received a speed boost.
Experts believe that the streamlined laptop will be further slimmed down by reducing the screen size from 13.3 to 11.6 inches and reducing the weight. The new model will therefore appeal even more to those who want power, but maximum portability on the road.
Apple's original MacBook Air, priced at the top end of the scale, received plenty of criticism for stripping out too many features, losing the DVD drive and, more importantly for some, the Ethernet connector.
2 years on, the success of the iPad has proven that the need for a DVD drive is starting to wane, while wireless networks in hotels and offices are more widespread.
Additionally, a report on Friday from DigiTimes (whose track record is a touch sketchy on such matters, admittedly) claims that Apple's primary notebook manufacturer, Quanta, has?landed orders?to produce the first 400,000-500,000 11.6-inch "MacBooks" for delivery to Apple before the end of the 2010. This suggests that we could see more announcements from Steve Jobs before the year's out.?

FCC checks out Archos 70
Archos has another tablet which has hit the hallowed hallways of the FCC in the form of the Archos 70, where it is also known as the A70S tablet. What makes this model different from the rest? Well, for starters, it comes with Android 2.2 Froyo preloaded alongside a 7-inch TFT LCD capacitive multitouch display. You won't find it lacking in terms of processing muscle either as a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor powers the device, being full well capable of supporting 720p video playback while boasting 250GB worth of internal storage space. Of course, there is a lower capacity model for those on a tighter budget with prices starting from $250, while the 250GB model will retail for around $320 when it hits the market this November.

The Deeplight Expedition is a fun, retro platformer - Time-Waster
Filed under: Fun, Games, Time-Wasters
The nicest thing about The Deeplight Expedition is the speed. For me, a large part of what makes a platformer fun is how the character reacts - does it run fast, does it jump high? And in The Deeplight Expedition, both are true; the protagonist is extremely responsive and zips all over the screen as you control it.
Other than the fun dynamics, it's a fairly stock platformer. You don't have weapons (at least not as far as I got into the game - maybe later on). You're basically navigating an abandoned maze, fraught with traps and danger, collecting runes and trying to retrieve an ancient artifact.
The game is large - I don't think you can finish the whole thing in 10 minutes. (I've certainly tried, and I've played it for longer than that with no end in sight.) If you're not bent on completing it, though, I think it makes for a very enjoyable casual game. It also automatically pauses when it loses focus, so you can easily come back to it several times during the day.

Twitter TV: CBS Buys Show Based on 'Don't Tell Steve' Account
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the network has now inked a script deal to produce a new series based on the Twitter account @shhhdontellsteve, a handle that provides semi-amusing stories about one man's roommate. The new show will reportedly be produced by CBS TV Studios and Katalyst, a production company owned by Twitter aficionado Ashton Kutcher. Kutcher and his team of executive producers, of course, will still have to come up with a convincing pilot before the show gets the green light, and constructing a compelling script around bro-centric one-liners certainly seems like a challenge. But, after some 12.5 million viewers tuned in for the premiere of '$#*! My Dad Says,' CBS must feel confident that people actually want to watch a Twitter-themed program -- regardless of how terrible it is.

Altec Lansing Octiv 202 Dual Audio Dock
Double the fun?
There is now a huge selection of audio docks on the market, but the ones that tend to stand out are the high-end models that boast impressive sonics, such as the Vita Audio R2i and Philips Fidelio DS9000, or those that have something a little bit different to offer.
The Altec Lansing Octiv 202 Dual Audio Dock certainly offers something a little different as it is capable of?accommodating?two devices at the same time. Of course, it is not the only dock around to offer such a feature, but this one comes with its own free app that lets you shuffle music between the two players, as well as an alarm clock app. What's more, it is designed to fit neatly into tight gaps and dead spaces, such as the corner of the kitchen worktop - a feature which sounds so simple but is something of a rarity on products of this type. The dock is certified as Made for iPhone and Made for iPod, although you'll need to make sure that whatever device you're using has OS 3.1 or later or it won't work.
After following the handy set-up instructions that are printed on the inside of the box when you open up the lid, the first thing that struck us about the Octiv 202 is the shape. Sporting a chassis that's been chiselled down into a right angle at the back, it's ideal for pushing into a corner. Finished in matte black, the dock is fairly unobtrusive, with the four glossy buttons along the top adding a touch of class. The buttons are for power, changing the source and for adjusting the volume. There's also a handy little circular remote control that, when not in use, magnetically grips onto the back of the unit. This has got a few more options, such as track skip controls and buttons to help you navigate around the devices' menu screens.
The dock comes with two adaptors so that you can accommodate an iPhone 3/3GS and a third gen iPod touch, but we found that we didn't actually need the 3GS adaptor as the protective case on our phone made it sit comfortably in the cradle without any extra help. Along with space for two iDevices, there's an auxiliary input for hooking up a non-Apple player as well as a built-in USB port that lets you charge an extra device such as a camera.
Once the iPhones/iPods are in place, you simply need to hit the power button on the top of the dock. Pressing the Source button will switch between the left and right-hand device and the auxiliary input, whilst there are three orange lights that run along the top of the unit to show you which of the inputs is currently being used.
The sound quality is really quite impressive for a dock at this price point. The mid-range is clear and warm, and even the bass sounds pretty good considering the size and power of the speakers. The volume goes up pretty high, but even cranking it up as far as possible without deafening ourselves, the sonics remained consistent with no obvious tinny sounds creeping in.
You can customise the background of the free Alarm Rock app and tweak several other minor settings, but the main draw is that it lets you pick a song from your iTunes library to wake up to. Choose wisely, is our advice.
The Music Mix app does what it says on the tin - creating a random mix of music between the two iPods. You can pick the track that you want to start with, simply by selecting it from your music collection before you open up the app, but after that it's down to the technical wizardry to decide what you listen to. Using a sliding scale bar, the app lets you decide what percentage of music is to come from each of the two devices, which is good news if your partner has appalling taste in music and an iTunes library to match.
Using a shuffle-style mix may work well for some, particularly if most of your music is of the same genre. However, if you've got a sizeable music collection spanning plenty of genres and obscure bands, then the sudden appearance of ghost tracks or a surprise rendition of one of Rage Against the Machine's saltier efforts during a relaxing cup of tea could put you off forever. Also, the display only shows the name of the track and not the artist, so if you want to find out who a forgotten song is by then you're out of luck.
The app also includes a "Juice Meter" which gives you a large graphic of the how much battery charge there is on each device.
Verdict:
Although there's no doubt about the usefulness of having a dock that can charge two iPods or iPhones at the same time, the Music Mix app will probably divide opinion - you'll either love it or hate it. Having said that, the Alarm Rock app is really very useful. But it's sound quality that counts when it comes to iPod docks, and the Octiv 202 really delivers in this area, making it a great buy.
